CBT/OSCE

Since October 2014, nurses and midwives trained outside the European Economic Area who are seeking UK registration must pass the NMC test of competence. 

Module

The test of competence consists of two parts.

Part 1 is a computer-based test (CBT). The CBT is multiple choice and can be taken at a Pearson VUE test centre available in most countries around the world.

Part 2 is a nursing or midwifery objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) – a practical nursing or midwifery examination. The OSCE can only be sat after successfully passing the CBT and is only available in the UK at a designated test centre.

There are Four testing ability of English language tested in this international recognised system as follows:

• Listening: taken by all candidates
• Reading: Academic or General Training
• Writing: Academic or General Training
• Speaking: taken by all candidates

Result

Performance is rated on a scale of 0 – 9. Candidates receive a Test Report Form, which shows their overall performance reported as a single band score as well as the individual scores they received for each part of the test
